The caution I would add is that a crappy generic USB drive will not provide much if any performance improvement. I wholeheartedly agree with the convenience aspects, but it shouldn't be overlooked that performance using fast USB 3 flash drives is significantly better than with most SD cards, even on a Raspberry Pi 1/2/3 with USB 2 ports.įor some values of "fast USB 3 flash drive". The big advantage to using a USB stick/pendrive over that of the microSD card, is ease of replacement in the RPi, it is much easier to swap over a pendrive than to remove & replace a microSD card, let alone the awkwardness of handling those microscopic SD cards.
